Participation in the 39th SmartHomeNRW Expert Roundtable in Düsseldorf focusing on Human-Centered Design, user acceptance, and the practical adoption of Ambient Assisted Living and Smart Home solutions.
On June 9, 2026, we had the opportunity to participate in the 39th SmartHomeNRW Expert Roundtable hosted by the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf.
The event focused on Human-Centered Design (HCD) as a critical success factor for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) and Smart Home solutions. Discussions highlighted that technological innovation alone is often not sufficient for successful adoption. User acceptance, usability, trust, and alignment with real-world needs remain essential factors for long-term success.
A particular focus was placed on the Human-Centered Design approach defined in ISO 9241-210, emphasizing the importance of understanding users' routines, expectations, limitations, and social contexts throughout the development process.
The expert presentations and discussions brought together perspectives from research, technology, and practical implementation, providing valuable insights into how digital solutions can better support independent living, safety, and quality of life.
